Airsoft Launcher Review: King Arms M79

February 10, 2017

The M79 Grenade launcher was born from a special program led by the US Army during the Vietnam war era.  It used a low-recoil 40mm grenade round that was able to travel a good distance and was regarded as “the platoon leader’s artillery”.  Fondly called “blooper” or “thumper” the M79 is still used today in very niche roles by certain branches of the military.

In film, the list go back as far as 1968 to the movie The Green Berets and was seen in other iconic films such as the Terminator 2: Judgement Day and The Expendables.

Not to be outdone by the silver screen, you can also find the M79 in various video games such as Resident Evil 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the compact version was featured in  GTA 5.

The M79 boasts a slightly longer barrel than some others such as the EGLM or the 6 shot GLM coming in at 36cm or 14inches.  Moving forward is the folding leaf-type sight and a front iron sight.  The trigger guard is able to folded to either the left or right side.

The the safety switch and the lever for you to load the launcher its above  the trigger, here at the rear.  I do want to say that the safety switch and the lever feels rather flimsy and this launcher’s leaf type sight needed a bit of adjusting out of box since it was crooked.  This could be just an issue with this particular one, but non the less its worth mentioning.

The furniture on the gun is REAL WOOD and the metal is an aluminum alloy so it does have some weight to it.

You will find sling mounts at the front under the fore grip and under the stock.  The one up front is extremely stiff and may require you to use a tool to move but the one in the rear does move with a bit of force.  Some lubrication is needed.

The M79 from King Arms can take your traditional shower grenades from Madbull (both 8mm and 6mm), TAG grenades, or the G&P rubber slug shots.

The gun feels very nice in your hands and while it has some weight to it, its not so heavy that it becomes a hassle to carry in a bag or slung over your shoulder if you were to take it to a game.  The butt stock shoulders very well and naturally wants to help you point the launcher at an angle allowing you to lob your grenades further out.

The controls work nicely, the leaf-type sight is easy to read, and over all its just a very straightforward grenade launcher.

There will always be a place in my heart reserved for launchers and every time I get to run with a team mate that has one I just can’t help myself but want to ask if I can shoot it.

While they may not be the most practical things to use, or the most perfect tool for a task, its all about fun and if you want some good fun at a fair price, I would give the M79 a chance.
