Shooting stances? Weaver? Isosceles? Modified Isosceles? Center Axis Relock(C.A.R.)?

May 11, 2017

For the longest time, there are various types of shooting stances created for shooting 'accurately' rather than shooting like an untrained gangster. So there's three most common shooting stances out there and each of them have slightly different advantages and disadvantages.

Isosceles Stance versus Weaver Stance versus Modified Weaver Stance

With the illustration with PhiTus' graphic art, we can easily see the main differences between the Isosceles Stance , Weaver Stance and Modified Weaver Stance.

Isosceles stance, as the name implies, the person would have their arm extended fully with the firearm in the center and legs spread apart at shoulder width with toes facing the target, such stance provides a solid platform for absorbing recoil but the down side would be greater body exposure.

Weaver stance, is a stance that the shooter would blade himself and placing the foot on the dominant side on the back and turning the weak side towards the target. The strong side of the arm would be extended and the weak hand would have the elbow bent as a support hand. Down side of this stance would be the very awkward movement when shooter is on the move, which is when the modified Isosceles comes into place.

Modified Isosceles / Modified Weaver, this comes in a variety of names, but the idea would be a hybrid between the Isosceles and the Weaver, shooter leans slightly forward with knees bent, and the strong leg is slightly forward of the weak leg. On the top body, the arms are very similar to the Isosceles, but with a slightly lowered support hand (element from weaver), such stance is very popular amongst the Military / LE community as it allows the shooter to still operate hand to hand combat / melee weapons on the same platform.

Center Axis Relock (C.A.R. system) By Paul Castle

Central Axis Relock (C.A.R.) System was developed by Paul Castle, a former military in the UK who was also the founder of Saber Tactical Group.  The stance was very different from the traditional stances and enables the user to keep the firearm really close to himself / herself while still being able to operate hand to hand combats or melee weapons. Major benefits also includes quick transition to all directions, mobility and smaller presentation of the body while going around corners or room entry situations.

If you've seen the movie John Wick, you should be familiar with the action (From 4:19) where Keanu Reeves shows the benefits of the Central Axis Relock system being quick in transition and reveals less of the body when coming around corners / opening doors.

Conclusion:

Each person might have their preferred stance while shooting, but it's definitely a plus if one could have an idea about most 'effective' shooting stances as they could be used for different situations. Personally I would use modified weaver for usual out door target practice and out door skirmishes where spaces are not limited. For CQB skirmisheswhere the environment is restriction, I would prefer the C.A.R. system for being able to engage targets in different directions in a swift manner.
