Alright boys and girls, I don't know if you have seen this. This is the Airsoft Innovations 40 Mike Gas Powered Magnum Shell, or just the 40 Mike for short. If you have not seen this thing or know what it does OR have no clue why its been stirring the pot so much lately, just stop right now and click HERE to go watch what it does. Alright? Watched it? If you are feeling a sense of uneasiness or general confusion, great, because thats where we all were after watching that for the first time.
We should be no strangers to A.I. and their craziness when it comes to producing airsoft grenades. They were they ones who really pushed hard to make the grenade a more mainstream product. In years past we have seen the Cyclone, Tornado, and XL Burst all come from them and they all represented a significant push in that product's market segment. But if you look at what those products represented, they were basically a refinement of what was either "already" out there or products with "similar" function.
This is why the 40 Mike is so different. The only similarity it has with any other product right now is that it designed to be a 40mm grenade that can fit into launchers, but that is it. Traditionally, launcher based grenades were shower types (I know there are others but I am taking about the general majority of them). By pulling the trigger once, a shower of BBs come flying out of the grenade and while useful in close quarters or tight spaces, you usually won't hit a single thing the moment you take it out side. You can usually bet that aiming it is futile as well. But with the 40 Mike, it shoots a stream of BBs out at a stable 240FPS in a pretty much straight line. Its also allows you to shoot 150bbs in a 1/3 of a second out to a 100ft with a 10ft spread (30m with a 3m spread).
If you have been having the same thought as me, you will realize how potent this grenade is going to be in the hands of people who will know how to employ it in a field. With the 40 Mike, the grenadier role is instantly viable and can potentially be extremely valuable as well. The biggest issue with shower grenades was its inability to hit anything at ranges outside of 10m, not to mention its lack of penetrating power through foliage. Not saying 240FPS is going to do a lot of damage through thick brush but its going to definitely rattle a few nerves and might cut through thin to medium bush cover easily. Point being, having your "burst" be linear creates an ability for the user to reach out and hit someone with relative accuracy and if used properly, it can be use to devastating effect when it comes to providing cover fire. Pairing your grenadier with your team gunner can do a lot of damage to the other team or hold down an area easily with without having to allocated too many men.
We only just mentioned about the linear shooting capabilities of the 40 Mike. The part that many people might forget or even over look is its spread 100ft out. Personally, to me, this is the game changer. Its so powerful that it can hold a 10ft spread 100ft out, in comparison to shower grenades, well....There is no comparison. In 1/3 of a second you are throwing 150rds out, if you are looking to be throw down some serious support fire or have doubts about an area, one or two of these bad boys will do the trick. Now imagine if you walked
out on the field and dedicated all your money to an ICS GLM and bought as many of these grenades as you can get a hold of, well, I think the rest can be left to imagination. The 40 Mike is an extremely thought provoking product and it really starts to give ideas to players, teams, or unit commanders (if you are the more serious type) as to how to employ this tool during a game or what roles can be opened up by using this.
I will also come out and say it, the 40 Mike is also going to be an extremely controversial product. I think we all know why as well. Essentially its a full-auto shell that more times than naught will be used to light someone up in shorter than desired ranges. While I can say for a fact that 240FPS doesn't really hurt, I will have to admit that 150bbs coming at you at 240FPS is going to suck, and going to suck a lot. I can also see people trying to put heavier bbs in there or even trying to be cheeky and take it to a CQB site. If you watched the video at the beginning of the video you will see just how devastating it is (even though I think it look incredibly fun!).
I am not going to make the ending of the post a long and drawn out exposition about being personally responsible or rant about why or why not you should use it. I want everyone to be able to make your own decisions. The main point is the 40 Mike is coming and its going to change the landscape. I can predict that soon after this other makers will start doing similar things with similar concepts. Someone might go out and make a Co2 version that shoots harder than 240FPS (because thats what we need). The potential for launcher based grenades are now limitless because of this and we can sadly pour one out for the shower grenade.
What do you guys think though? Do you think this is a step in the right direction and do you think this kind of grenade really makes grenade relevant? Let me know in the comment section. What would you guys think of rocking an ICS GLM with every chamber loaded with a 40 Mike? I look forward to running that myself!
