The Avatar grenade has been out for a while and its been making waves around the world. In case you didn't know, the Avatar grenade is an extremely modular grenade system that features a core and different skins allowing the user unlimited flexibility to choose what type of "grenade" they want to use for the situation at hand. Up to this point there are two available skins that have been release, the MK1 and the ORB. The MK1 is what you see as the header of this article and the Orb is this one here that you see our friend Channel Airsoft showing off.
What is different about the Avatar and what makes these grenades different from others AND why did I call it the CQB Cheat Grenade? Well, it all comes down to concept, design, materials used, and how each grenade skin serves a different purpose. Looking at the traditional or for a lack of a better term, generic, airsoft grenade, we see the same formula over and over again. You fill BBs into a container, you charge it with gas, then you throw it and it triggers the explosion of the BBs loaded inside. While very straight forward and serves its purpose, its not always effective as many times its hard to predict the dispersion of the BBs and its hard to figure out how your grenade will react when thrown. With the Avatar, all of this becomes something you can pretty much predict and this is how.
Lets first look at its concept. The concept as mentioned above is modularity and being based off a core, you are equipped with a green gas powered cylinder that only services one purpose and that is to act as the propellent holder for your skin which is actually your "grenade". Having a separate system with dedicated holes that allow you know your dispersion pattern gives you more knowledge when employing this grenade in a tight space or around a corner.
Design of each skin is key to to know which one to use for what situation. Each skin though may look similar in terms of form factor but if you look closely, like the two new up coming skins such as the Plasma and Agent, you will see that the different holes are placed in different places when in comparison to the Orb. The different placement of the holes guarantees different dispersal patterns. Case in point, if you use the Plasma skin, you can opt to throw it with the light facing up towards a while with its holes on either a front to back or a side-to-side basis. This allows for the BBs to shoot either back and forth or form left and right, covering a larger area. With agent skin, the holes are places on the middle of the skin, this allows for a more rolling dispersal pattern. What this essentially does is that if you throw it against the sides of a corner it can bounce and with its rotation upon the throw, it will deliver its payload in a circular pattern.
After bringing up the idea of design, its key that we now discuss the materials used. The materials used are soft rubber like plastics. This makes each skin (with exception to the MK1) relatively bouncy and allows for for creative uses, not to mention it will increase the durability of both the internals of the skin and the core itself. The materials play a huge part in the application of each skin as due to their ability to deflect off of hard surfaces and bounce into harder to reach areas. Finally the feature that really stands out the most is something I have been talking about throughout this whole post and that is its usage, or purpose. Everything from the MK1 to the Agent, each skin has specific purposes for different tasks. If you are looking to breach a large open room, maybe the Plasma skin is best, long hall ways, you can opt for the Agent, and rooms with lots of walls and corners, I would say the Orb will decimate your opponents with ease.
The Avatar grenades have come and changed the way we look at the airsoft grenade and how it can be a modular platform much like other things we use in airsoft. Our guns are modular and our gear is modular, having our grenades be modular just adds to the fun of our hobby/sport.
